ESSAYS AND ARTICLES ON PUBLIC ART

An annotated bibliography of 131 magazine articles, published between 1969 and 1994, on Public Art and related themes.

This is a selection of english language magazine articles from a much larger bibliography which was collected for my own research and to assist my students. Magazines come and go and articles in them tend to disappear. Originally it was a list of titles only but this was not enough to inform students of the actual content of the articles.

At the time of collecting these articles, the 70's and 80's, very little had been published on public art. Few, if any books, and no magazines devoted to it . To my knowledge the first magazine entirely devoted to public art was founded and edited by Herve Bechy, out of Paris, "Les Dossiers de l'Art Public" That magazine continues now as a web site Art-Public.Com

The occasional article in art or architecture magazines and catalogues and newspaper articles were really the only source of published material and it was important for my students to have access to these.

To make the bibliography more useful I set out to select the articles which I felt contained material that was important in the development of public art and try briefly to describe the content and flavour of each article. Simply they are my favourite and key articles. It is a personal choice of course but one which I am sure will be of interest to all those with a concern in public art.

I have thought of updating the bibliography and may do at some time in the future. However by the '90's a number of books had been published and specialist magazines had appeared. There is now a plethora of material on the subject.

Meanwhile you may like to read an anthology of original essays which I have published on public art and education in contextual practice in art.
